Extreme weather conditions of the Southern Ocean caused soil erosion responsible for the carving of the soft limestone into caves and cliffs. The orphaned stacks formed into isolated cliffs of up to 50 meters high off the shore of Port Campbell are collectively called the 12 Apostles. They used to be nine formations and arches but one of the stacks fell down in 2005.
A sonar mapping of Victoria in 2016, however, revealed that there were five more apostles hidden 6 kilometers offshore sitting 50 meters beneath the ocean. It was believed that changes in the sea level had drowned the apostles before they could erode. They had been preserved for up to 60,000 years.
The site of the 12 Apostles was also called the Sow and Piglets. The Mutton Island near Loch Ard Gorge was the Sow and the rock formations or the 12 Apostles are the Piglets. The 17 apostles of which 8 remained standing because 5 had drowned and the others caved in have been drawing visitors from all over the world.
The waves in the surf were responsible for the creation of the apostles and the same ocean water was to blame for their collapse and drowning. Such is nature’s power in creating a picturesque image of land and sea under a blue sky or a colorful sunset.
