Itinerary

  • Why join our Sovereign Hill Tour?

It’s not every day you have the chance to step back in time and get to experience the sights, sounds and atmosphere of what life would have been like for the early settlers of Australia’s Goldfields.

Not only is this a unique opportunity to better understand the history of the state of Victoria but it is also heaps of fun!
There is no better way to understand the history of this region than to live it! On this tour you will be able to interact with all aspects of the famous open air Gold Museum, with entry included as well as a mine tour and return comfortable transport with City pick up and drop off, there is no better way to unleash your gold fever!

  • Journey through the Victorian Countryside to Ballarat

Either meeting the bus in Federation Square or with pick up locations from selected CBD hotels, enjoy a comfortable ride on an air-conditioned coach with wifi, as we travel the hour and a half from Melbourne to the town of Ballarat. As we come out of the city into this central Victorian region, the rolling plains of the farmlands and paddocks will highlight why this area is known as ‘The Goldfields’.

As we pass through Ballarat on the way to Sovereign Hill you will notice the architecture of this Victorian City with the ornate lamp-posts, monuments and historic buildings.

But once we arrive at the Open Air Museum, this is where the history truly comes alive, with priority access, skipping the queues, you will enter into a world of gold!

  • Explore Sovereign Hill at your own pace

Enjoy a whole day to explore the many activities on offer at Sovereign Hill, we suggest you grab a map, and start planning which of the fascinating demonstrations you would like to attend. Head up to the old School Room and try your hand at cursive writing with ink and quill. The bowling alley offers entertainment for all ages, pop into the Candle Makers and see the dipping of candles into coloured wax to make incredible creations. The lolly shop is always a favourite as the traditional methods of hard boiled sweet making is demonstrated, of course with free samples to try! Don’t miss the Gold Pour where you will watch a real Gold Bullion bar being melted down and can learn about the process of forging coins, jewellery and ornaments.

When it is time for lunch you can’t pass by the bakery along the old street, without stopping in for a delicious Cornish Pastie – the favourite packed lunch of the miners!

However there is also a modern cafeteria, where you can purchase meals from this century (at own expense) before heading back to witness the afternoon demonstration of the Red Coats marching, loading and firing their muskets.

Down at the creek you can let the gold fever take over and pan for gold of your own! One of the friendly townsfolk will be happy to answer any questions and will show you techniques to collect real gold to take home, a truly memorable souvenir.

  • Option to Visit Ballarat Wildlife Park

For an extra $20 you have the added option to visit the Ballarat Wildlife Park, where you’ll see a unique selection of wildlife in their natural habitats. You’ll see saltwater and freshwater crocodiles, Tasmanian Devils, kangaroos, koalas, echidnas and so many more. You can wander through the park taking in the many exhibits, join guided tours and participate in interactive shows. Feeding times can be a lot of fun – particularly with the crocs!

No worries if you choose not to add on the Wildlife Park entry this means more time at Sovereign Hill to explore and visit some more of the fantastic novelty shops on the old High street, such as the Blacksmith, Post Office, Photographers, or even enjoy some beers in the tavern!

  • Return to Melbourne

The journey back to Melbourne includes onboard entertainment on the comfortable coach, with wifi to upload your pictures from the days adventures!
